Default MySQL user and password

So today I was trying to create a new database on MySQL. This is what I did:
shell> mysql
 
Welcome to the MySQL monitor.  Commands end with ; or \g.
 
Your MySQL connection id is 2
 
Server version: 5.1.41 Source distribution
 
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.
 
mysql> create database new_development;
 
ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'social_network_development'
It seemed I was denied permission. So then I tried:
shell> mysql -u root mysql
 
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
 
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A
 
Welcome to the MySQL monitor.  Commands end with ; or \g.
 
Your MySQL connection id is 4
 
Server version: 5.1.41 Source distribution
 
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.
 
mysql> create database new_development;
 
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)
I got the default username and password from
